We’re excited to be a sponsor in the 4th annual Oral Cancer Foundation Walk/Run for Awareness on Sunday, May 31, 2015, and we want our patients to join our team that is participating.
Please register as a member of our team today. You also can help us reach our fundraising goal by making a charitable donation. Register and donate here.
The 5K will be held at Redmond Park, 735 E. Jefferson St., in Bensenville.
You may remember that eight members of the Forever Smiles team participated in the Oral Cancer Foundation’s Walk/Run for Awareness last fall.
We plan to focus more effort on raising oral cancer awareness in 2015 for two reasons:
1. Dentists and orthodontists are on the frontline of identifying oral cancer.
You see your general dentist at least twice a year for routine cleanings and checkups. Those who are in orthodontic treatment see us every four to six weeks. That means we’re in unique positions to detect cancer early.
2. Survival rates haven’t significantly improved over the years.
Although oral cancer isn’t among the deadliest cancers, nearly half of all people diagnosed with it don’t live beyond five years following their diagnosis. This is because by the time these cancers are identified, they typically have reached advanced stages.
Some oral cancers respond better to the treatments available today, and that has resulted in a slight improvement in the survival rate over the past decade. We want to see more oral cancers discovered and treated early, and we’re doing our part to make that happen.
